Georgia State Patrol accident investigators suspect that a distracted driver caused an accident that left one person dead and another injured.

The crash happened around 6:40 p.m. on Georgia 166 at its intersection with Kuglar Road, according to accident reports. The area is near Bowdon.

Thirty-two-year-old Bremen resident Brittany Keeton reportedly told troopers she was paying attention to her daughter in the backseat when the crash occurred. She said she didn’t see that a motorcycle in front of her was attempting to turn.

Keeton’s 2018 Chevy Malibu hit the back of the Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle as it entered the intersection.

Thirty-six-year-old Heather Turner of Bowdon and 44-year-old Bobby Thomas of Carrollton were thrown from the motorbike, State Patrol said.

Turner died as a result of her injuries while Thomas is being treated in hospital.

Charges against Keeton are pending. They are expected to include second-degree vehicular homicide, following too closely, and not wearing a seat belt.

According to accident reports from GSP,15 people were killed on Georgia’s roads over the Memorial Day weekend. Last year, 17 people died over the 72-hour period while eight were killed in 2018.

Lt. Stephanie Stallings of the GSP said while she was pleased with the slight decrease, too many people were still dying on the state’s roadways. 

This year, there were traffic-related deaths both in metro Atlanta and throughout the state.

In addition to crashes handled by troopers, police in Atlanta, Forest Park, Cobb County and Gwinnett County also reported fatalities.

In some cases, the victims’ families have grounds for wrongful death claims.
