James H. Maben Detained After Police Chase and Crashing into Patrol Cruiser in Smyrna

Accident reports obtained from the Smyrna Police Department confirmed the arrest of a man who crashed into a patrol vehicle while fleeing officers in Smyrna, Georgia. The incident was reported just after noon on Tuesday, May 5.

According to the reports, the suspect, identified as James Henry Maben, 63, was causing a traffic disruption near Hawthorne Avenue and Hawthorne Circle. Upon receiving complaints from commuters, officers located the offending vehicle, a black Mercedes-Benz sedan, and attempted to pull it over.

However, the motorist failed to oblige, accelerating his vehicle instead as he led police officers in a brief pursuit through Smyrna. During his flight, the suspect exceeded speeds of 90 mph on the pedestrian-populated Hawthorne Avenue, which had a speed limit of 35 mph.

His arrest warrant also confirmed that Maben continually ignored officers’ siren as he fled. According to the accident reports, the chase eventually ended when the suspect encountered a patrol car in the area of Dixie Avenue and collided with it.

Officers took Maben into custody, with at least eight charges leveled against him, including two counts of violation of a traffic control device.

In addition, he faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving too fast for conditions, driving on a suspended license, and operating a vehicle without registration or a valid license plate.

He was detained at the Cobb County Jail, with a bond set at $9,020.
