Two vehicle-collisions in eastern Putnam County, Georgia, left two drivers injured. The two men were identified on Tuesday, March 17th, as Lee Stafford, 70, of Jamestown, and Yanes Augustin, 51, of Gainesville.
The accident that injured the two men occurred on Saturday, March 14th, on Interstate 40. According to the Georgia State Patrol trooper, Colby Huff, Stafford was driving a ’95 Chevy van, while Augustin was in a 2007 Ford F-150.
The two men were traveling west at the 300-mile marker in Monterey when both vehicles collided in a curve. The drivers sustained severe injuries, and Augustin was flown to an area trauma center for treatment.
Stafford was transported with a road ambulance to Cookeville Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. He had a passenger in his car, identified as Tonya Burtrum, 37, of Jamestown.
Accidents aren’t uncommon in Georgia, and there are different kinds. There are vehicle-versus-vehicle accidents, vehicle-versus-pedestrian, vehicle-versus-motorcycle, and vehicle-versus-trailer accidents.
The reason why accidents occur is mostly due to the negligence of drivers. Over speeding is one of the common causes of accidents, as well as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Another is reckless driving when drivers drive through traffic signs and lights, tailgate or change lines quickly without paying attention to other road users. Rain makes the road slippery, causing cars to spin out of control.
Design defects in vehicles, driving at night without beam lights, and wrong-way driving causes accidents. Drivers should exercise the utmost care while on the road and obey traffic laws.
