UPDATE: Pilot Roy Smith Reported Trouble in Fatal Gordon County Plane Crash


Officials have learned additional details about a flight that crashed on the morning of February 8.

According to reports, the pilot of the fatal plane crash that killed four people called in reports of trouble during the flight. Pilot Roy Smith reported he was experiencing difficult with the flight control system before the aircraft crashed. Reports mention a flight instrument that indicates the aircraft’s position relative to the horizon. 

Another new detail released is that the plane was on a training flight the morning it crashed.

The flight was headed to Nashville and carrying four people when it crashed on February 8. There were no survivors. The victims were identified as Morgen Smith, 25 and Savannah Sims, 23, both of Atlanta, Roy Smith, 68, of Fayetteville and Raymond Sulk, 63, of Senoia.

Roy Smith was the pilot of the aircraft and father of Morgen Smith. Sulk was the co-pilot. Savannah Sims was reportedly the girlfriend of the co-pilot Raymond Sulk.

All were pronounced dead at the scene from “multiple blunt force trauma”. 

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the Cessna 501 Citation left Falcon Field in Peachtree City at around 9:45 a.m. The flight was headed to Nashville, Tennessee. The plane went down approximately 30 minutes later in a wooded area off Mauldin Road in Fairmount. 

Officials are looking into air traffic control records, weather information, and maintenance records to help determine the cause of the crash.
