Authorities said a 25-year-old man was intoxicated and speeding last week when he crashed into another vehicle, sending it tumbling off the highway and onto nearby railroad tracks.
Stephanie Anselmo, 39, was killed in the crash, which occurred early Friday morning in Cook County, according to authorities. Investigators said the collision caused her vehicle to burst into flames and fly over a concrete barrier.
Tevin Washington, of DeKalb, was arrested shortly after the wreck and charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence causing death or great bodily harm. He made an initial court appearance Sunday when his bond was set at $150,000.
Authorities said Washington had been out having drinks celebrating his 25th birthday.
Just after 2 a.m. Friday, Washington was driving about 85 mph in a 55-mph zone on southbound U.S. 57 near 138th Street, according to investigators. As he moved into the center lane, his vehicle struck the rear of Anselmo’s SUV, prosecutors said.
Anselmo’s vehicle reportedly went over a barrier and crashed into the Metra tracks below.
Investigators said Washington left his vehicle and walked away from the scene, returning about 20 minutes later. He also is accused of driving with a suspended license.
