Update: Scott Gragson to Pay $12.8 Million to Melissa Newton’s Kids

Prominent real estate broker Scott Gragson will have to pay over $12 million to the children of a woman killed in a crash last year. The family sought representation from a car accident lawyer.

According to media reports, 36-year-old Melissa Newton died in the accident while three other people received injuries.

Gragson crashed his car in The Ridges near Flamingo Road and Town Center Drive on May 30, 2019. He had just left a charity golf tournament hosted by Colliers International of which he was an executive vice president.

Police said he was speeding when he lost control of his Range Rover and hit a tree.

His blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit after the deadly crash.

In February this year, he pleaded guilty to felony charges of DUI causing death and DUI causing substantial bodily harm.

Court documents show that Newton’s three children will receive $21 million from a settlement. Gragson is expected to pay $12.8 million while his insurance will cover the remainder.

There were four people in his vehicle: Newton, Greg Tassi, Christie Cobbett, and Christopher Bentley.

Bentley suffered brain damage while the other two survivors received unspecified severe injuries. All three reportedly took legal action against Gragston.

Both survivors and relatives of deceased accident victims and seek compensation from at-fault drivers after a car accident. They usually need assistance from a car accident lawyer.

Such civil legal action is separate from any criminal case against the driver.
