A seven-year-old girl died on Tuesday night following an accident on Macon Road in Columbus, Georgia.
According to accident reports, Mariah Lewis was ejected from a vehicle driven by her father Marcus Lorenzo Lewis.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:35 p.m., Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton said.
News reports say Lewis was trying to escape from police when he struck two cars. He was arrested at the scene on outstanding warrants.
Columbus police chief Ricky Boren opted not to comment on the accident. He said the Georgia State Patrol would handle the investigation.
According to reports, officers were trying to capture Lewis but they were not engaged in a high-speed chase.
Officers in plain clothes reportedly recognized Lewis and requested that a patrol unit stop him.
Reports say he sped out of the McDonald’s at 3315 Macon Road in a Ford Fusion and drove east in the westbound lanes.
The officer had to go west and make a U-turn to follow Lewis safely. However, Lewis crashed before police caught up with him.
Information from the Georgia Department of Public Safety revealed that Lewis was driving the wrong way on Macon Road when a Nissan Altima hit his car on the rear passenger side.
The Altima was making a turn at Forrest Road.
Lewis’ car overturned on the driver’s side and its rear end struck the driver’s side of a Jeep Renegade, according to accident reports.
Lewis was taken into custody on a number of warrants including:
- Aggravated assault
- Second-degree criminal damage to property
- Criminal trespass
- Possessing a gun during the commission of a crime
- Being a convicted felon with a firearm.
