Man Dead in Fiery Charter Bus Crash in Chino Hills

The driver of a Volkswagen Jetta died Sunday morning after crashing into a charter bus on the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills. The accident happened around 1:26 a.m. near the Grand Avenue exit. The bus was carrying a college basketball team.

The San Diego Christian College basketball team had just played a game at California State University Bakersfield that evening and were on their way home when a Volkswagen Jetta struck the back of their bus.

California Highway Patrol officials said that the Jetta caught on fire following the collision, and the flames quickly spread to the bus. The bus driver and all 18 basketball players escaped the crash unharmed.

According to the Chino Valley Fire Department, the driver of the Jetta was pulled out of his vehicle by a motorist who witnessed the crash and then stopped to help. First responders treated the man at the scene, but sadly he did not survive, soon succumbing to injuries sustained in the crash. Investigators said that high speed might have been a factor in this crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
