Vehicle-Pedestrian Crash in Athens Claims the Life of Sidney James Batchelor


A Toccoa pedestrian was killed on Friday morning after being tragically struck by a commercial box truck while crossing the Atlanta Highway in Atlanta, Georgia. The fatal collision took place just before dawn on Friday, March 20.

The Athens Police Department received a distress call at about 3:30 pm, reporting a fatal crash which left a pedestrian dead. Police gathered that the crash victim was walking across the street near Mall Access Road at the time of the accident.

It was determined that the deceased was heading out of the RaceTrac parking lot, towards the Perimeter Inn Motel located across the Highway when a commercial box truck travelling through the east traffic lanes on Atlanta Highway hit him.

The impact of the collision knocked down the pedestrian, causing him multiple injuries. The man succumbed to his wounds before he could be taken to a hospital. However, the motorist was unharmed.

The deceased has since been identified as 69-year-old Sidney James Batchelor, from Toccoa, Georgia.

The operator of the commercial truck, whose name was not disclosed, remained on the scene until the police arrived and cooperated with the authorities without incident. Impairment was not suspected as a factor in the crash.

The Motor Carrier Compliance Division arrived at the scene to inspect the truck and determine any possible breach in regulations. The vehicle driver was not arrested, nor were charges filed against him.

The case remains under investigation by the Athens Police to determine the liability and cause of the fatal collision.
